Before you take your Practical Test you will have to take a Theory Test. When you pass you will be given a pass theory certificate.
You will have to complete the Theory test
on a computer screen. The test consists of two parts - 50 multiple choice questions and then a video based hazard perception test.
If you pass one part and fail the other you'll fail the
whole test, and you'll need to take both parts again.

The required pass mark for the
theory questions is 86%. This means you must answer 43 out of
50 questions correctly to pass this section.
The Hazard Perception section contains 14 video based clips, which contain 15 scoreable 'developing hazards' in total. Each developing hazard can earn 5 points if spotted very early. If you do not spot the hazard early then the amount of points that are available for that clip will be reduced. There are a maximum of 75 points available. The pass mark required is 44.
You are given 40 minutes to complete the theory section. You must be successful in both parts to gain an overall pass. Your results will be instant.
