Step 1: Getting Your Provisional Licence

You must be at least 17 years of age to take driving lessons or drive a car. As an exception, if you are receiving disability allowance you are allowed to start driving at 16.

Your next step is to send off for your Provisional Licence. These are issued by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) but the application form D1 can be obtained from any large Post Office.

You will also have to send a passport style photograph. When filling out the form you are asked to prove your identity, so you may have to supply some documents. You will also be required to supply a passport style photograph and a fee which is currently £45 by way of cheque or postal orders.

Then send your application to:
DVLA
Swansea
SA99 1AD

Once you receive your Provisional Licence, check that all the details are correct and then sign it as it will not be valid until you do so.
